New blog projects: Famous people take our picture and you get lost with a dog

I finally bought two urls I’ve been thinking about. Both of them are co-projects with other people. Neither is set up yet, so, you know, sneak peek! I linked them but be warned, nada there. You’ll note that, like this bloggy blog, they have unwieldy urls. I feel strongly about this–it’s an untapped area of the internet. Everything is linked anyway, why go around purchasing urls that are half a word or some crazy made up reference to a full thought?

Kirsten and her mom

1.) Pictures Of Us By Famous People: My friend Kirsten and I are working on this one, started at the Turino Winter Olympics in ’06. Her sister is dating Joey Cheek, a speed skater and all around nice guy who was competing. Her parents kindly invited me along, so holding with my Always Say Yes to an Adventure rule, I went. Joey ended up winning a gold and donating the money to Right to Play, which led to a media blitzkrieg and all star treatment for us tag-a-longs (and an article about it in the LA Times, for me). In the course of a few days of specially hosted dinners, police escorts across the city, and many a greenroom, we ran into some celebs. In a moment that would become frickin’ genius in hindsight, while waiting at Good Morning America’s greenroom, Kirsten turned  and asked Al Roker to take our picture. He obliged. And our concept was born. Photos so far of us by famous people: Al Roker, Joey Cheek & now Scott Simon (NPRs morning edition), Luis (Sesame Street), taken at a party at Thomas Lauderdale’s building, which was super exciting because it’s right across the street from my work and I was curious as a squirrel about what the space looked like. Pictured are Kirsten and her mom with Luis, also a very nice guy.

2.) Isolate Yourself In A Rural Area With A Dog We Provide: Don and I used to meet on Saturdays to discuss poetry. Ok, it only happened twice, and both times we drank a lot. Anyway, it produced this service concept, which he named. Don’t you want a trip planned for you in some picturesque place, with a rental dog of your choice? I imagine it as a kind of slot machine design, where one side is a rural picture and one is a dog. Both could be fed by Flickr tags. You spin one until you’re happy, then you spin the other. Then you imagine yourself in a rural area, with a dog, for as long as you wish. Part of the idea for this came from a friend who once suggested that there should be a service called Flex Dog, like Flexcar (Zipcar now) for dogs. And then, years later, someone went and created Flex Petz.

The internet is awesome.

Ha! It will be the blog that is only updated every three years, and each update will be essentially the same, except we’ll be slightly older.
