How could I not join a bookclub of super friendly people who let my bbq share their table and who are reading Persepolis and Blankets…AND who have a club initiation where you slam a can of Four Loco (like Sparks)? Right?

Anyway, in between shopping and asking my lady friends for advice on scented candles, I’m going to Powell’s tonight for a lecture by David Carr (former addict –> NY Times columnist), and then to On Gallery where there is FREE BEER from sponsor Lagunitas and we’re ringing in the new social digital age…where Facebook takes over the TV waves and gives cool people usernames or something. I just hope we can turn off status updates. 10pm-2am, with the Facebook takeover at midnight. Come on by.

Oh Portland, you keep being weird, you

Tonight, while in the midst of my bike commute over the Hawthorne bridge, watching the dragon boaters practice and two people in kayaks make their way across the water, I decided to detour to Roots Organic Brewing instead of heading home, on the condition that there be a table in the sun. And there was, so I spent a glorious hour reading The Atlantic on What Makes Us Happy and drinking the Organic red ale, which frankly is a little stanky for my tastes. Then the sun went down, the temperature dropped 10 degrees, and I headed inside unaware of the music show that was of course happening.

Oh, the unexpected weekday bar show. It started out normal enough. A long-haired young guy got up with a guitar, strummed a few chords, and launched into a rendition of No Woman No Cry. Then, he gave a heartwarming intro to a song he’d written about Mt. Hood.

Next, his lady friend joined him on a between-the-knees African style drum. For song number four he went to keyboards, she went to guitar, and their chubby white boy friend, complete with tiny blond dreads, took to the stage. Very seriously, Blond Dread opened a mini moleskin notebook, and proceeded to read/sing a poem about Portland. The chorus went like this, read slowly and earnestly: “Keep it weird. Keep it weird.”

It was all very cute and very Portland (except, you know, the Keep BLANK Weird is something we stole from Austin) and I was two Organic ales in so had a hard time not smiling too much even though this was clearly not tolerable for more than the four songs they had already covered. Then I noticed a sign over the bar announcing that patrons could bring in their cell phones anytime for environmentally responsible recycling, and I had a little Portland love/barf fit.

In Portland fashion I tipped too much and biked away.

I was going to tell you all about the First Amendment lawyerly event I’m headed to, which I’m interested in because the way the First Amendment is defined and used will help shape the future of citizen journalism. Here’s the frontline bit on Mayhill Fowler, who went to a fundraiser (closed to press) for Obama’s campaign and recorded his comment about bitter and gun toting American’s that some worried would skewer his chances and others termed “Bittergate.” Ha.

But we were saved from Sarah Palin, and it’s Friday, TGIF! Fun fun fun! So instead, here’s an article about a bar…where the booze is vaporized into the room, and that’s your drink, better like gin my friend. And yeah, you do have to wear those jumpsuits. Also: Who knew The Atlantic had a food column?

Powell’s Books is starting a happy hour with cheap beer!

OH man, Things to Read, Drinks to Drinks just turned into Buy a Book, Have a Beer. If you spend $30 at Powell’s between 3-6pm M-F you get a Powell’s pint glass and a coupon for $1.25 beer at local Bridgeport Brewery. Which, I’ll have you know, is a stumble from Powell’s and has outdoor seating in the sun. Which, I’ll continue to have you know, means I’ll be reading in the sun with a beer, a lot.

Joy, oh joy. Thanks to Kirsten, who suggested we collect as many as possible. Agreed, except my book budget isn’t that big.

Good thing there’s a happy hour for library card holders, too.

Ransom Hour!

Our friend Steve had a “Goodbye Steve” party a few weeks ago, not because he’s leaving, but because he’s a CPA and goes into a work cave until March. SOMEONE (two someones) snatched his Wordstock Festival tote bag, presumably of some sentimental value becuase he’s on the board. This mysterious ransom note was sent earlier today, demanding happy hour drinks and the eradication of taxes.

Will Steve prevail and get his tote back from the evil ransomers? Will he be forced to accrue dreaded plastic bags whilst grocery shopping? Will passerby mock him, thinking he is not literary without a clear sign of his love of books? Will his books themselves pitch off his balcony into the street below, and go to karaoke at the Alibi instead? The horror, the horror.
