I’d like her story: Move to Paris, be a poor art student, buy the cheapest material in the store and emerge later with these. If this next winter is rainy and gross, I may go mad and start crafting intricate paper flowers like this and pinning them all over my walls. Jen Stark’s sculptures:

Tuesday, April 7th, 2009
These puppies sold out fast–within 4 hours–at 20×200, as things tend to do there. But that’s just the 8×10 size for $20, you can still get the 11×14 size for $50, which is better anyway.
More Guns! Shot Through.

Watch it here or on Wholphin #5, as #3 in the menu series. I love it, but it needs more guns, to make a beat.
Sexpigeon postcards are on the way
Thursday, March 26th, 2009From the fabulously snarky SF photo blog Sexpigeon:

“A shipment to our representative in the Northwest.”
Guess who guess who? That’s right. New friend! Wanna know what it is? Wanna help me put them in trees and squirrel dens and fixed gear bicycle spokes all over the city?
The trailer is out for Where the Wild Things Are!

New Music: Herman Dune
Tuesday, March 24th, 2009Besides doing an excellent floppy hipster dance, Herman Dune has fabulous lyrics and adorable love songs. Oh, and they’re French. Here’s a few of their videos. They played here last night and I totally missed it because 1.) I’m out of the loop and 2.) I’m sick.
I Wish I Could See You Soon
Dancing kids! Bouncing letters! Puppet angels! So charming. Lyric: “How long till you can see her? And I’m like, well, the sooner the better.”
This is my favorite, Not On Top. Lyric: ”Feel like I’ll never get my shit together. 27 and I’m fucked. Well it’s ten years, from teenage, and that’s a freakin’ lot.”
1-2-3 Apple Tree “Well you know better than me, on all kinds of topics, like what fruit is native, what fruit is exotic, you know the right names for flowers and for animals too, you know how bad I like to be with you.”
My friend Rob who shared this is a human music library, and he’s just started his own blog here.
Where the Wild Things Are movie, little heart be still, I am so excited for October
Wednesday, March 18th, 2009
Filmed in Australia by Spike Jonze, with a script by Dave Eggers, Jim Henson Creature Shop costumes, and a trailer featuring The Arcade Fire…what’s a hipster not to love? Too bad we have to wait until October 16th, but you better believe I’ll be first in line.
According to the LA Times (they link out to some good stuff), the movie was pulled and got a makeover after kids left the theater in tears. It’s a creepy story, no question.
A leaked test video is embedded below, but it’s not worth watching. Jonze responded to the leak saying that it was a very, very early test, that the actor kid is not the actual actor but the kid from a Yeah Yeah Yeah’s video (hipster cred still rising), and, tspecial effects aren’t worked out, and–most noticeably for those of us who grew up with the book–kiddo is wearing a rabbit suit, not a wolf suit. New friend! Only Half Kidding, a photo blog
Monday, March 16th, 2009
On Friday I volunteered for the Literary Arts 25 year anniversary party, in part because Kirsten asked for volunteers and in part because Literary Arts has been hooking me up with free tickets for as long as I can remember. To them I owe my memories of more poets and writers than I can name. One of the best things you can do when you want to be a writer yourself is hear people read their work aloud. It’s also nice to see that they’re average humans.
Anyhoo, another volunteer was Kirsten’s friend Eliza. She has a blog called Only Half Kidding, which is not only an excellent blog name, but it follows through by also being a rad photo blog. She has a fair number of photos of dishes, which I have a real fondness for, maybe because I have a sinkful at all times. Check-check-check it out.
Thanks to Brian, for keeping us all connected with your magical iPhone.

Tuesday, March 10th, 2009My first tattoo–the picture!
Friday, March 6th, 2009Ok, here it is. It’s not quite done yet because I couldn’t handle even a little bit more after 1.5hrs. It’s a lot of color! People keep asking me if it’s marker, and I’m flattered, actually. The colors are pop-pop bright, but the red didn’t take well and on the top of my arm, where the circles meet, needs some more work.
My favorite part? You can see freckles through the yellow. And in a few years, if I want to, I can add more rings, or add patterns within the existing rings. Herringbone on the yellow! Polka dots on the blue!
My friend Patrique asked what it all means, if you’re interested, it’s below. (more…)
Body as art, tans as art? Tan the Man, then make your own tan tattoos. Tantoos.
Friday, February 27th, 2009
This was bound to happen: James Titterton, an artist in the UK, is offering his body as a canvas for a piece called Tan the Man. The winning designs, submitted via email, will be printed as vinyl stickers, affixed to his body, and then he’ll enter a tanning booth. The photos will be on display in a gallery. See his blog for more and submit yours before Sunday!
This reminds me of something I read years ago in a photography interview. If you have a favorite photo on an old fashioned negative, use medical tape and tape the negative down on your skin before sunbathing. I remember the photographer had used a portrait of his brother, and after several days in the sun he had the positive image on his tanned skin.
Thanks to Brandy at Everyday Monkey, where she continues to spot a monkey a day.

I love typography & a well dressed guy. Perfect.
These are from Veer, a creative house that sells illustrations & stock images. I thought, why does that sound familiar? It’s because I was slipped one of their sketch books of the Very Secret Order of Creatives Understanding. But I have yet to use it, I’m low on creativity.
Her Morning Elegance. Who loves stopmotion animation? I do!
Wednesday, January 28th, 2009Good morning! This may be my earliest post ever. Here’s something to start your day.
My favorite are the sock fish! I imagine all my loner socks swimming the walls in my sleep.

Holiday Long Weekend Projects! Make Others Happy and Get Silly.
Wednesday, November 26th, 2008Ok ok, so I was all Grumpy Mc Grump Grump and then two awesome things happened.
1.) I went to the bank and they refunded me $140 in overdraft fees because the account was supposed to overdraft to a credit card but didn’t. While I was there the manager was telling me about a client who is an older musician with pancreatic cancer. His medical bills are over $1 million, he lives in subsidized low income housing, and he has 12 cents in his bank account. The bank manager rallied all his coworkers for a food drive, then other area managers got involved, and then the president of the Oregon Bank of America got in on it. The manager was leaving to deliver 8 bags of groceries and supplies to the apartment tonight, but the phone was cut off so they were just hoping they could find him there.
I wanted to give $20 but he suggested a gift card instead. So I’m going to see what I can do to help.
Project 1: Do something for someone who needs a hand.
2.) Sometimes your friends are bummed. They have a bad breakup, they hate work, they miss their cat, so many things. This fabulous chica Katie and her beau Matt make fun videos and do cute art projects, so when their friend was sad, they stuck him in a video and danced around him until he was happy.
Project 2: Make your friends happy if they’re sad, no matter what it takes.
You should read her blog Color Me Katie, for giggly little bits like this:
Awesome. She seems to exclusively wear cute strapless dresses in the summer, which I can also get behind. I found her blog via A Cup of Joe, who blogged about Katie’s video of dancing with strangers.
Hooray for silliness.
O(bama)MG. My favorite graphic election coverage.
Wednesday, November 5th, 2008I spent election night sneaking into parties, bowling, and dancing in a muddy bank parking lot to a 10 piece circus band. Here’s a video someone took. Portland, oh love.
Before I forget about all this goodness, I’m collecting the memorabilia here on my bloggy blog. I’ll start with this, from Hipster Runoff, along with the post Should I Vote?
Intellecutal A.D.D.
Friday, October 3rd, 2008More adventures in Gchat:
me: hmmm. I just googled “intellectual ADD” and got no results, “creative ADD” had a few
Michael: What do you mean?
me: well, I have this issue, where whenever I start thinking about something, my mind maps out all the other obscure things that are associated with it.
Like, if I think, watermelon, then I also start to wonder if those square watermelons are real, and then also that there was this book I wanted to read called Watermelon Sugar, and then also that you can fill one with alcohol and place it in the sun.
So, I really just wanted to think about watermelon, but there’s about 5 other tangents that are worth pursuing.
So, how do I do that in writing?
Emily Dickinson used to do this cool thing on her manuscripts where when she wasn’t sure of a word she would put a + above it, then stack all the alternative words above that or, if there were too many, make a footnote of them. (more…)
