basket o' flowers! I want a bike basket like this so bad!Guess what time it is? Time for the June dress from my friends over at Dress of the Month Club! It’s the Jenny Dress. I’ve got two dresses on order over there, wahoo.

Plus, their newsletter (monthly, naturally) is looking swanky.

More biking in dresses is on the way in my world!

BillyKirk leather goods, and Hollister Hovey a new blog to follow

Friday, May 29th, 2009

hisssssssI confess, in addition to purchasing shoes as a self reward for selling my car, I also went out and bought this BillyKirk belt that I’ve had my eye on since last year. A quick assessement of my closet revealed that my standby belts used to be my–ready?–high school belts that I primarily used to hold up my snowboarding pants (ditching assemblies to take a few runs was standard). My belt was for sale at Local 35 last I checked, but when I asked the owner Justin he didn’t know what I was talking about and suggested I root through a sale bin. And ta da! the belt was there, and 50% off to boot (originally $150). I love the simplicity of the clasp, and how it looks like snake fangs. Mine is dark brown.

billy-kirk-2BillyKirk is a small company of two brothers who employ Amish families to do much of the leather work. They make gorgeous bags, check out their site. How much do I want this bag? So much. Not $295 much, but close.

There’s more backstory on the BillyKirk boys, including photos of their childhood, here. I just rediscovered that blog Hollister Hovey, by rather swanky NY sisters who I want very much to be my friends. (I found the Lorca/Dali movie there, among many other things.) Their childhoods sound adorable. It makes me want to write more about mine, and just generally be more fabulous.

Summer shoe sale! Woot! It’s Piperlime.com

Tuesday, May 26th, 2009

leiaFriends, remember how much I wanted those Camper Leia sandals in turquoise? These little guys:

But they were $140, plus shipping, boo. However! Weirdly, Gap to the rescue! The mega corp that is Gap/Old Navy/Banana Republic/Athleta now has a website called Piperlime that looks like an attempt to give Zappos a run for its money. And the Leia is on sale for $89.50, with free shipping.

Who has a new pair of kicks? That’s right.

They’re having a 30% off sale this week, and it looks like sales are frequent. Piperlime, check it out. Guys and kids, too.

Somewhat related: The CEO of Zappos has a really good blog. He nails why Twitter is good for business and people, and many of the comments are from presidents/founders/CEOs etc. of companies you’ll recognize. Friendly, enjoyable business blogs are hard to find. Well done, Tony Hsieh. I learned from it that all Zappos employees are given the same 4 week culture training, offered 2k to leave in those first 4 weeks (1% do), and are made to answer the customer service phones for 2 weeks. Every single employee, regardless of position, goes through that. Wow.

Fold, flop, flip, flop, and go! Foldable flip flops.

fold and flop

Is it summer yet? How about now? Now? We can’t wear flip flops at work anymore, so I would love to have a pair of these folding flip flops in a pouch to tuck in my bag and pull out at the end of the day. Made from 99% recycled tire rubber. $22

What I got my mom for Mother’s Day (and myself)

baggu I love you

I have several of these baggu bags in wild colors (without the mom heart) and I love them. Canvas tote bags are so lame, heavy, and easy to forget. These little baggus pack into a tiny pouch and turn up magically in my purse or jacket pocket right when I need them. I also bought myself several of the mesh veggie bags so I can stop coming home with twenty plastic bags wrapped around each tomato. A few of those are on the way to the momers also.

My mom lives in Paia, Maui and shops at Mana Foods–one look at the goddesses and dolphins on their website will tell you that my mom and her reusable bags are about to be a big hit.

Paper feathers as accessories and house sprucer-uppers

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

Can you believe a set of 3 is only $10? Her blog is called 10 Dollar Drawings, but still. I’m also into her food blog Bread & Honey. A 25 yr old mother, and still she cooks more than me. Sigh. I am lazy.

I’m ordering some and will report back. Etsy is totally my late night shopping network. Thank god I don’t have tv or I’d be up to my ears in kitchen gadgets. Oh wait.

Want? American Apparel swimsuit with a hood

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

american nastyAmerican Apparel is nasty, n.a.s.t.y., and I don’t like their ad campaigns one bit. But, while trolling their catalog for an appropriate star trek fan outfit (right, more on that later) I found this. That low back, I love it so. That hood…I love/hate it.

It’s a mute moot (ah duh, thanks Jim) point though, because I have both T+A and American Appy accounts for neither in their cuts.

Tim Walker’s world of fancy fun and giant baubles

Monday, April 20th, 2009

Isn’t this picture a great inspiration for a yard party? Why not dress up the lights, too? Most of Tim Walker’s sets are party inspiration. If you recognize some of the following pictures, it’s because Tim Walker shoots for Vogue a lot. And how could you forget these? I want to live in this world of giant props. This first print is for sale here (12.95 pounds), his portfolio is here.

4 picks from Stewart + Brown organic clothes on sale

Friday, April 17th, 2009

shore pantsI really like Stewart + Brown, one of the original organic cotton fashion companies, but their prices can be through the roof. Thankfully, the sales are just as surprising. If you find yourself staring out the window going “is it time for summer yet?” “now?” “how about now?” then you need a dress.

Check out this wide leg Shore Pant–original price $225, yipers! But now? On sale for $84, with all sizes in stock.

Nokomis dress with the cuteness

Wednesday, April 15th, 2009

nokomis is so expensive sometimes

I’m having a small fit over this Filomena Dress by Canadian company Nokomis. Check out that swallowtail bottom! Those pockets! That shaped waist! The only thing about Nokomis is they cut their armholes a little large and too far forward, so if you have any sort of boobs you get a bra revealing pouch when you lift your arms. But let’s look at that swallowtail some more. So cute! Too bad it’s $260, but they mark everything down eventually.

Michael Jackson’s estate sale includes stuff you can actually afford

Tuesday, April 14th, 2009

truly an icon

Holy cow. Did you see this New York Times article on Neverland Ranch being auctioned off? MJ is apparently trying to block it, but this site has everything listed and the bidding has begun. Some hot stuff in there folks. And yes, creepy stuff. The furniture section (ew) is almost entirely porcelain figurines of children (ewwwwww). But the weirdness, and, oh! the clothing. There’s a lot of broken links on the auction site, but click around. You can’t look away.

Here’s what I’d go for, with the starting bids and estimated going prices.

Paul Bedard portrait, above, $200-$300

oooh la la

Sequin jacket, starting bid $100, estimated $300-$300 (more…)

An explanation of the hipster trend.

Let’s take a moment to admire Paul Smith stripes

Wednesday, April 8th, 2009

I’ve always wanted something in these iconic stripes. Unfortunately, the only thing I’ve been able to afford was a pair of gladiators made from very thin black leather straps, on sale at Heathrow two years ago. I’m wearing them today and I slept with my windows open last night, which both mean winter is officially over. Also: I ordered Dress of the Month Club’s purple April dress, because I don’t want to wear pants after April.

I’m not even going to tell you how much these things cost at Paul Smith.

Once a geek, always a geek

Thursday, March 12th, 2009

always dressed for the occassionI can’t escape it, I’m a geek. So when I got my first ever tattoo, I looked up tattoo blogs, browsed groups on Flickr, and researched how, exactly, my tattoo would be classified. When I asked my tattoo artist, he said without hesitation, “this would be Geek.” C’est la vie.

Personally, I thought I was a little more art deco, or at least abstract. How beautiful are these Mucha tattoos? And my favorite random picture–this girl with a tattoo in her armpit. But no, I’m a geek.

It’s a category I seem to share with a lot of gamers, math nerds, and computer programmers. You have no idea how many people have Mario tattoos.

Show me your tattoos?

How To Dress Your Boyfriend As Your Nerd Boyfriend

Wednesday, March 11th, 2009

grandmaster flashy flashThe fairly new blog Nerd Boyfriend (archives go back to January 27th) gets the  I-wish-I’d-thought-of-that award for not only showing inspirational pictures of famous nerds, but for taking the next step and tracking down similar clothes for purchase online. Want to dress your man in Frank Lloyd Wright’s glasses? More of an Alistair Hennessy girl? Personally, I’m a fan of Grandmaster Flash, pictured at right.

But what, no Rushmore…yet?
