New blog projects: Famous people take our picture and you get lost with a dog

Monday, April 6th, 2009

I finally bought two urls I’ve been thinking about. Both of them are co-projects with other people. Neither is set up yet, so, you know, sneak peek! I linked them but be warned, nada there. You’ll note that, like this bloggy blog, they have unwieldy urls. I feel strongly about this–it’s an untapped area of the internet. Everything is linked anyway, why go around purchasing urls that are half a word or some crazy made up reference to a full thought?

New Music: Herman Dune

Tuesday, March 24th, 2009

Besides doing an excellent floppy hipster dance, Herman Dune has fabulous lyrics and adorable love songs. Oh, and they’re French. Here’s a few of their videos. They played here last night and I totally missed it because 1.) I’m out of the loop and 2.) I’m sick.

I Wish I Could See You Soon

Dancing kids! Bouncing letters! Puppet angels! So charming. Lyric: “How long till you can see her? And I’m like, well, the sooner the better.”

This is my favorite, Not On Top. Lyric: ”Feel like I’ll never get my shit together. 27 and I’m fucked. Well it’s ten years, from teenage, and that’s a freakin’ lot.”

1-2-3 Apple Tree “Well you know better than me, on all kinds of topics, like what fruit is native, what fruit is exotic, you  know the right names for flowers and for animals too, you know how bad I like to be with you.”

My friend Rob who shared this is a human music library, and he’s just started his own blog here.

Meet the Ambassadors of Cute

Thursday, March 12th, 2009

ambassadors-of-cute

Japan has appointed these ladies as the Ambassadors of Cute in a bid for attention, according to the New York Times. Reuters suggests this is a ploy to increase Japan’s “soft power,” or cultural power, as it slips increasingly into the shadow of China’s monolithic economy. The word for cute in Japanese is even cute: kawaii. I think they’re well on their way.

Still, ladies, I want your job. I would totally be the one in the middle, which would you be? And can you imagine if the US had ambassadors of culture? Who would they be?

Escape from Civilization, By Bike Named Tiernanoak, in Mexico

Monday, March 9th, 2009

don't roll over!My friend Greg has been biking through Mexico since December, and blogging about it the whole way over at Home Is Where You Hang Your Helmet. This photo, which I yanked from his recent post on baja, is overlooking the ocean. In the desert. All. By. Himself.

His most romantic adventure yet happened in his last post, The “Road” to Mazatlan. Here’s an excerpt, and I highly recommend you keep reading on his blog. (I should note here that Greg is quite literate, but typing on foreign keyboards, being very hard of seeing, and casting off the world has made his grammar and spelling…slip. It’s forgivable.) Take it away, Greg: (more…)

No Kissing Zones in the UK: Move Along Now, Love Birds

Friday, February 20th, 2009

I want that hairkissing here is ok, but no tongue

No Kissing Zones have been set up in several railway stations in England as a tongue in cheek (forgive me, I had to) reminder to keep moving in drop off areas. A counter Kissing Zone has been set aside in a less trafficked area for smooching, and presumably for asking what the dinner plans are and if you want to go to brunch on Sunday.

This makes my weekend–if commuters need to be reminded to stop with the affection and move along, then the world is a happier place than I thought. And props to the British officials who thought this was a better option than the Unloading Zone sign. Watch the video explanation at the UK Telegraph.

That warm fuzzy feeling, from Cute Things Falling Asleep

Friday, February 13th, 2009

It’s time again for that stupid Hallmark holiday where everything is repacked into containers shaped like hearts, like all of sudden that equals romance when before it equaled low quality milk chocolate. Blech I say, blech.

But hey, single or paired up, everyone likes to get that little glowy feeling in the pit of their stomach. And so I give you the blog Cute Things Falling Asleep. I will not even give you an image, but I will say that there was recently a squirrel. Eeep!

Yep, a collection of videos of cute things, falling asleep. Ranked on a scale of 1 to 5 by CUTENESS and SLEEPINESS. And now there’s a companion blog, Cute Things Laughing.

I’m pretty sure this is why the internet exists.

Kittens inspired by kittens

Some days YouTube just saves the day. This is one of those YouTubes for one of those days.

Favorites:
“I’m her mom.” “No, she’s not!”

The various “eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee”s

“I have to go potty. Down by my feet. Psssssshhhhhh.”

“I’m a magician!” “I’m a rabbit!”

Thanks to Sean McGrath, who sent this to encourage us all to attend his comedy radio show LiveWire!. Fortunately, LiveWire! has a podcast!

Yoga mats with a sense of humor and fresh Indian music on WK Radio

Monday, February 9th, 2009

oopsMy knee has been hurting lately, bad. As a quick update, my left leg was broken below the knee last year when I got hit by a car. The pay out was how I was able to go ride camels in Israel back in October. However, there are times when my knee aches and keeps me awake, and even with my daily bike commuting I haven’t built all the muscle back.

eeep! A paper snake!Yoga is the way to go for an injury like this, but occasionally I need a little extra push. These cheeky yoga mats ($85) caught my eye in an old issue of Bust Magazine. The grass is my favorite because I’ve always wanted to do yoga outside, but the linoleum floor with spilled pills appeals to the side of me that doesn’t want to go to yoga at all.

Right now I’m listening to DJ Anjali and The Incredible Kid on Weiden+Kennedy Radio. They’ve just returned from India with some sweet Bollywood style music, check it out on the podcast. It just has to make you happy.

Namaste, Monday.

The President throws snowballs at my cat

Tuesday, February 3rd, 2009

I get my news from comics like Toothpaste for Dinner, so I’m a little behind the times, but it seems that the President is still doing adorable things. Good to know. People are making comics, and variations of comics, of his latest snowball fight. This one looks a lot like Ole.

How I feel: Winter funk on the cusp of spring

Tuesday, February 3rd, 2009

iz true, I am feeling the fire on my sexy stomach

Whatever, groundhog A Cup of Jo wrote about having winter blues today. I’m feeling off, too, but it’s more a feeling of transformation, a doggedness and many obstacles still to come, but with something exciting in the air. High though, like in the stratosphere. And I remain silly, steadfastly silly. And here’s the perfect picture. Thanks, The Big Picture. Their description of the Tough Guy Challenge:

Billed as “the safest most dangerous taste of physical and mental endurance pain in the world”, the Tough Guy Challenge took place yesterday, February 1st, on South Perton Farm, near Wolverhampton, England. Thousands of challengers (men and women) started the endurance race, with hundreds dropping out along the way due to exhaustion or injury – broken bones, dislocations, and over 600 cases of hypothermia. Even the overall winner, James Appleton, was treated briefly for hypothermia. The course takes racers through 21 obstacles – through mud, freezing water, across ropes and burning terrain.”

Well, at least the weather is on my side today.

Where would you wish to wake up tomorrow?

Wednesday, January 14th, 2009

Another Fifty People One Question video, this time filmed in Brooklyn.

From Crush & Lovely (follow link for NY question).

My favorite answers:

  • Does it have to be a real place?
  • Outer space
  • I’m actually quite lucky if I wake up in the same place where I woke up this morning

But the best:

  • A world where every closet opens up into someone else’s closet and then you come out of the closet and you’re in a totally different place and then you meet that person and get to have breakfast with them.

Nice. Where would I wake up? On Totoro, in My Neighbor Totoro land.

Get through the winter with Things to Read, Drinks to Drink

Wednesday, January 7th, 2009

two of my favorite thingsYou know that friend you have who should really keep a blog? I have several. When I told Jess Fucking Price to get a blog she deflected it (skillfully) by referring me to a site by her college friends, Yer Sweet Chimneys. It’s a group blog with lots of categories/sub-blogs to navigate, including a cartoon .gif blog about The Insecurities of Inanimate Objects. They even have savvy internal ads for their own blogs. Mostly it makes me want to start a blog with my friends…a mini internet, just for us.

My two highlights of YSC are Sound & Vision, which is like an mp3 blog except each song is paired with a striking image, and Things to Read, Drinks to Drink, which combines two of my favorite pastimes. It’s simple: Book review + drink recipe. Staying in on a Friday? How about the Virgin Suicides and a gin martini? Home all weekend? Grab some absinthe and The Sun Also Rises.

Anyway, I have the nasty habit of half starting 14 books at once, so here’s my list of things I’m reading. Drink suggestions, please. (more…)

Now that dog needs a scarf!

Sunday, December 28th, 2008

Icy branches would make good swizzle sticks in a hot toddyPortland is never ready for the big storms, and this year we got nailed. It was one of the largest storms of the century, but also just 13 inches. In Colorado, where I grew up, that’s not going to raise any eyebrows. But here in the Pacific NW, it’s a doozie.

Mayhem and lots of hot alcoholic drinks ensued. Schools were canceled for over a week. Most of my friends didn’t have to work. Buses were stuck (200 buses in one day). All in all, it was awesome. We took advantage by sledding on cookie pans and an old snowboard, and then breaking into a snow filled swimming pool. Above are branches covered in a quarter inch of pure ice, which coated houses, cars, and roads.

One of the cutest moments of Portlandness was when we took Bella, Matthew’s dog, on an epic snow walk through SE. We stopped for lunch at Bread and Ink Cafe and tied her up. An hour later when we emerged she was wearing a dashing brown and black angora scarf, looking happy. I suspect someone working at Red Light across the street saw her being cute and thought, “Now that dog needs a scarf!”

She’s been wearing it on all walks since. I plan to pass the cuteness on to the next dog who looks a little chilly. Every dog needs a scarf!

Holiday Long Weekend Projects! Make Others Happy and Get Silly.

Wednesday, November 26th, 2008

Ok ok, so I was all Grumpy Mc Grump Grump and then two awesome things happened.

1.) I went to the bank and they refunded me $140 in overdraft fees because the account was supposed to overdraft to a credit card but didn’t. While I was there the manager was telling me about a client who is an older musician with pancreatic cancer. His medical bills are over $1 million, he lives in subsidized low income housing, and he has 12 cents in his bank account. The bank manager rallied all his coworkers for a food drive, then other area managers got involved, and then the president of the Oregon Bank of America got in on it. The manager was leaving to deliver 8 bags of groceries and supplies to the apartment tonight, but the phone was cut off so they were just hoping they could find him there.

I wanted to give $20 but he suggested a gift card instead. So I’m going to see what I can do to help.

Project 1: Do something for someone who needs a hand.

2.) Sometimes your friends are bummed. They have a bad breakup, they hate work, they miss their cat, so many things. This fabulous chica Katie and her beau Matt make fun videos and do cute art projects, so when their friend was sad, they stuck him in a video and danced around him until he was happy.

Project 2: Make your friends happy if they’re sad, no matter what it takes.

You should read her blog Color Me Katie, for giggly little bits like this:

Her caption: a morning shower is more enjoyable with balloons

Awesome. She seems to exclusively wear cute strapless dresses in the summer, which I can also get behind. I found her blog via A Cup of Joe, who blogged about Katie’s video of dancing with strangers.

Hooray for silliness.

Between that video and this picture, I’d say we successfully documented our trip.

You lucky thing, you

Wednesday, October 8th, 2008

Superstitions are kind of creepy, and I’m wary of people who stick to them. But then, I still do the the little kiss-the-ceiling move when I go through a yellow light (illegal in Oregon, btw), and I even do it on my bike (kiss-the-sky?). Not out of belief that it will ward off accidents, but because it’s cute, gives me something to do other than plod ahead, and is a fun way to interact with the world.

Really, why not attribute personal meaning to otherwise mundane things? Kids give the world so much wonder–fairies in the backyard and monsters in the closet. Such easy little pleasures. While I won’t go around with a lucky blue rabbit foot on my ear, I do like the concept of actively seeking good fortune through items or habits.

So far all I can identify is my yellow light habit and my favorite ring from Small Things Designs. This ring (the blue swallow image) just keeps coming back to me. I’ve dropped it all over the US– in movie theaters, in streets, in cars, and it makes its way back to me.

P.S. How cute is that pink and brown asymmetrical vintage mini dress?

For Plumpy: ideas about naps

Monday, August 18th, 2008

Since he’s hosting my blog, Plumpy gets a guest blog.

After disappearing from gChat at 3:24, he returns at 5:47 with this:

“ideas about naps”

1) take one on the couch
2) awesome!
