I want to work for National Geographic and report from the jungle! Need a writer guys? I can weather the jungle and still turn out a good story, hell I lived in the jungle of Mazunte in the rainy season, I think I can handle New Guinea, particularly if they don’t have land crabs.

The groundhog even gives (puts up with?) interviews (transcript: mmmrph squeek mmrph click) and being paraded all day. And there’s more than one place that holds a festival. SE Portland doesn’t have groundhogs, but we sure do have a lot of cats, so I’ll propose my own forecast system.

Here’s the list of 2009 groundhogs and their predictions, via Wikipedia. They have a correct guess score in the low 30%, but I’m still unclear on what they actually predict. Does spring mean higher temps? Flowers in bloom? A dating frenzy? Anyhoo, say hello to Malverne Mel, Wiarton Willy, Shubenacadie Sam, and the head honcho Punxsutawney Phil. Personally, I’m a fan of Wisconsin, for naming their little guy simply, “Jimmy the Groundhog.”

And here’s some more crazy photos of the 20lb rodent, which is roughly the size (and shape) of my cat Huxley. I can attest that hoisting Phil in the air must be a chore. In fact, I’ll go home and put Hux over my head, see if he freaks, and give the results tomorrow.

As a B-day gift to myself I scored a really awesome retro white naugahyde couch off craigslist. Pictures forthcoming. A woman pulled over and tried to buy it from me as I was moving it in.

Hiking with backpacks through the magnificent Red Granite Mountains of Sinai’s High Range is an experience of a lifetime. Explore the beautiful ancient monasteries, Bedouin gardens, orchards, oasis, waterfalls and rock pools, accessible only by foot. Enjoy the incredible panoramic views of the High Range, which span the whole of the Sinai Peninsula, to the mountains of North Africa, the Gulf of Suez, the Gulf of Aqaba and to Northern Saudi Arabia. Climbing to the summits of mountains such as Mt. Catherine, Mt. Sinai and Jabel Bab.
The hiking difficulty can be eased by using camels to carry our camping equipment and other supplies, these will meet us each evening at the days camping spot. This way we carry in our packs only what is necessary for the day’s hike.
